Meet Idyllwild’s Dog Mayor
Before you explore, don’t miss meeting or at least spotting Idyllwild’s honorary dog mayor, Max. This furry local celebrity embodies the town’s laid-back, welcoming spirit and reminds visitors that here, dogs are more than welcome—they’re part of the community.
The tradition began in 2012 when the non‑profit Idyllwild Animal Rescue Friends (ARF) held a fundraising election where only pets could run, and Golden Retriever Maximus Mighty‑Dog Mueller won by a landslide, raising over $31,000 for the rescue. The title has continued through three generations, with the current Mayor Max III serving as the town’s symbolic but hugely popular ambassador, often accompanied by his sidekicks, Vice Mayor Meadow and Deputy Mayor Mitzi.
Visitors can meet him in person on North Circle Drive in front of Wooley’s on Thursdays and Fridays at 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m.

FAQs
Do I need a permit to hike with my dog in Idyllwild?
Yes, for most trails in the San Jacinto Wilderness, you need a free wilderness permit, which you can pick up at the San Jacinto Mountains State Park Ranger Station. Additionally, many trailheads require a $5 daily National Forest Adventure Pass for parking. Always keep your dog on a leash to protect local wildlife and stay permit-compliant.
Can I bring my dog to meet Mayor Max?
Absolutely! Mayor Max III is very dog-friendly. You can usually find him and his deputies in downtown Idyllwild (near Wooley’s) on weekends. It is a popular photo opportunity, so just ensure your pup is comfortable with crowds and other dogs nearby.
Are there any “no-dog” zones in Idyllwild?
While Idyllwild is incredibly welcoming, dogs are generally not allowed on the Deer Springs Trail beyond the state park boundary or within the Mount San Jacinto State Park wilderness area (except for service animals). Most of the National Forest trails, however, are open to leashed pets.
What should I do if my dog has an emergency in Idyllwild?
Idyllwild is a small mountain town without a 24-hour emergency vet. In the event of a serious issue, the closest emergency animal hospitals are located down the mountain in Hemet or Palm Springs (roughly a 45-60 minute drive). It is highly recommended to carry a basic pet first-aid kit for hikes.

From trails to patios to cozy cabins, Idyllwild is a paw‑fect getaway for pups and their humans. So leash up, pack the treats, and get ready for a howling good time in the mountains!
